Sri Maha Mariamman Temple

Oldest Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur

History

Founded in 1873, this is the oldest functioning Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur.

It started as a private shrine for the Pillai family and was opened to the public in the 1920s. The temple's most outstanding feature is its magnificent 22.9m-high gopuram (gateway tower), which is intricately decorated with sculptures of hundreds of Hindu deities. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Mariamman, a protector against illness and disease.
