Rex KL

Revived cinema turned creative cultural hub

History

RexKL is a prime example of adaptive reuse. It was once the iconic Rex Cinema, which entertained movie-goers for decades before falling into disrepair after a fire.

In 2017, a group of architects and entrepreneurs revived the building, preserving its raw, industrial character while transforming it into a dynamic arts and culture hub. It now houses an independent bookstore (BookXcess), food stalls, pop-up retail spaces, and a large event hall for film screenings, concerts, and exhibitions.

Travel Tips

  • Explore All Levels: The building is a maze of interesting spaces. Be sure to explore the different floors and the famous cavernous hall of the BookXcess store.

  • Events: Like Jao Tim, check their social media for weekend markets, workshops, and performances.

  • Food & Drink: A great place to grab a coffee or a meal from one of the artisanal food vendors.
