St. Mary's Cathedral
St. Mary's Cathedral
An ancient cathedral that still stands to this day
History
A competition for the cathedral's design was held, but none were approved until A.C. Norman, the government architect, proposed one in the Early English Gothic style. Built in 1894, it is the first brick church in the Federated Malay States and the oldest Anglican church in the region. It features a pipe organ by Henry Willis, who also crafted the original Grand Organ of the Royal Albert Hall. During World War II, the windowpanes were removed for safekeeping from bombings but were never recovered.
Significance
Today, St Mary’s still stands in its strategic location in the most historical and charming section of the nation’s capital. It is still active to this day with its numerous services for those who follow the faith.
