History
This site marks where Kuala Lumpur's first bridge was built, linking to Yap Ah Loy's commercial hub, which included opium joints and gambling dens. After his death in 1885, Sir Frank Swettenham transformed the area into a commercial and recreational center known as Market Square and was known for its Dutch-inspired gables. The OCBC Building (1938) and Clock Tower, built to commemorate King George VI's coronation in 1937, are notable architectural landmarks. The Lebuh Pasar Besar Bridge, originally constructed in 1901 using steel structures, was dismantled and replaced with a modern bridge to accommodate the heavy daily traffic.
