Look up. Towering 95 metres above Dataran Merdeka, this flagpole marks one of the most important moments in Malaysia's history. 

At 12:01 a.m. on 31 August 1957, the British Union Jack came down for the last time as the Jalur Gemilang rose into the night sky.  

Today, the 95-metre flagpole stands on that exact spot, where thousands gather every Merdeka Eve to celebrate Malaysia's independence.
