History
Dataran Merdeka, originally called the Selangor Club Padang, was established by the British in 1884 during their colonization of Malaya. Its strategic and exclusive location mirrored the ambiance and environment of their home country. The field was a favored spot for social gatherings and sometimes hosted cricket matches. A fountain constructed in 1897 stands at one corner of the square. The area is encircled by colonial-era structures, including the renowned Sultan Abdul Samad Building, which enhances its historical allure.
Significance
Dataran Merdeka remains a favorite location for public enjoyment and serves as the site for the grand annual Independence Day celebrations on the eve and day of August 31st.
