Malaysia Day 2024 Malaysia Day is a significant annual public holiday that is celebrated on the 16th of September each year. This day is dedicated to commemorating the establishment of the Malaysian Federation on that exact date 1963. The formation of the federation was a momentous event that saw the unification of Malaya, North Borneo (which is now known as Sabah), Sarawak, and Singapore into a single state However, it is worth noting that Singapore was expelled from the federation less than two years later, on the 9th of August 1965. Kota Kinabalu Hosts a Captivating 'Rumah Madani' Performance for Malaysia Day 2024 Kota Kinabalu is set to host a remarkable and engaging performance centered around the “Rumah Madani” concept during the national celebration of Malaysia Day 2024, which will take place on September 16. Datuk Christina Liew, the State Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Environment, who also serves as the co-chairman of the main committee for Malaysia Day 2024, announced that this captivating performance will consist of five distinct segments, all presented in the form of dance at Padang Merdeka. “This extraordinary performance will highlight various facets of Malaysia’s achievements, including themes of resilience, unity, progress, and national transformation, and will involve a total of 100 participants,” she mentioned in an interview with Radio SabahFM on Monday. In preparation for the event, Liew noted that a full rehearsal for the national-level Malaysia Day celebration is scheduled for September 14, beginning at 6 PM at Padang Merdeka. This rehearsal aims to ensure that everything runs smoothly on the actual day of the celebration. Furthermore, Liew outlined additional events that will take place during the celebration, including a welcome dance, the signing of a special book dedicated to Malaysia Day 2024, the ceremonial cutting of the Malaysia Day cake, a Merdeka tour convoy, and a ceremony to receive the Jalur Gemilang flag. The Malaysia Day celebration, themed “Rumah Madani: Jiwa Merdeka,” will also see the involvement of 85 members of the Royal Malaysia Police, who are prepared to ensure that the event proceeds without any issues. A CHRONOLOGY OF MALAYSIA'S FORMATION Nowadays Recognised as Malaysia Day 1945 'Malayan Union' was introduced by the British government as a proposal towards independence. At first, it was protested by the majority of the local people because it caused the Sultan to lose power in the political field. 1948 Malaya was declared a state of emergency due to the Communist rebellion. 1949 The first election of Malaya was spearheaded by the Alliance Party namely UMNO, MCA, and MIC representing the 3 main races Malay, Chinese, and Indian. 1955-1956 Negotiations to London led by Tunku Abdul Rahman to discuss the independence of Malaya. Through those negotiations, an agreement was made in February 1956 and independence would officially be granted. 1957 Independence and the formation of the Federation of Malaya on 31 August 1957. 1960 The Emergency was abolished in 1948 because the Communist rebels began to lose power. 1962 Negotiations after negotiations were made to achieve independence for Singapore, Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei. In the beginning, Sabah and Sarawak agreed to join Malaya but received strong opposition from the Philippines and Indonesia. 1963 The formation of the Federation of Malaysia was formed on 16 September 1963 consisting of 9 states in Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. 1965 However, due to a misunderstanding between the leaders of the central government and the Singaporean authorities, Singapore decided to leave the Union on August 6, 1965 and form a separate country. Installation of Yang di-Pertuan Agong XVII DAULAT TUANKU The installation of Sultan Ibrahim as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong is expected to take place on 20 July 2024, a few months after Ibrahim ascends the throne on 31 January 2024 at Balairung Seri, Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur. The ceremony will be held in the Malay Royal Ceremony. During the ceremony, the new Agong will recite his Oath of Installation and give his first speech from the Throne. His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim was elected by the Malay Rulers in the 263rd Special Meeting of the Conference of Rulers, held at Istana Negara on 27 October 2023. The previous Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, ended his five-year reign on 30 January 2024. HIS MAJESTY SULTAN IBRAHIM Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar ( سلطان إبراهيم ابن المرحوم سلطان إسکندر) , born 22 November 1958 is the seventeenth and current Yang di-Pertuan Agong (king) of Malaysia. He is the fifth sultan of modern Johor, ascending to the throne following the death of his father, Sultan Iskandar, in 2010. A motorcycle enthusiast, Sultan Ibrahim is the founder of the annual motorcycling tour event Kembara Mahkota Johor. On 31 January 2024, Sultan Ibrahim was sworn in as the seventeenth king of Malaysia, having been elected to a five-year term on 27 October 2023. Sultan Ibrahim was appointed as the Crown Prince of Johor on 3 July 1981, and has primarily resided at the Istana Pasir Pelangi since then. He served as the regent of Johor between 26 April 1984 and 25 April 1989 when his father served his term as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. In recent years, Sultan Ibrahim gradually took over some state duties and functions from his aging father. These included the 211th Conference of Rulers, where Sultan Ibrahim and Sultan Abdullah, the Crown Prince of Pahang, represented their fathers in the meetings, among other state functions. Sultan Ibrahim was crowned as the Sultan of Johor on 23 March 2015. The last coronation was that of his grandfather Sultan Ismail on 10 February 1960. From 2015 onwards, 23 March was made an annual state public holiday as the Sultan's official birthday, replacing the public holiday on 22 November, the Sultan's actual birthday. Sultan Ibrahim became the first ruler of Johor to celebrate his birthday celebration in Muar on 22 November 2012. He picked the town because it was "rich in history and tradition besides being peaceful, beautiful and progressive". He wanted the state government to gazette all the old buildings in the town as a state heritage. On 27 October 2023, the Conference of Rulers elected Sultan Ibrahim Ismail as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia), replacing Abdullah of Pahang.[4][30] During this time, the Conference of Rulers also elected Nazrin Shah of Perak to a third term as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong. KL20 Summit 2024 The two-day KL20 Summit 2024 spearheaded by the Economy Ministry wrapped up yesterday, marking Putrajaya's latest step to establish the country in the top 20 global startup hubs by 2030. During the summit, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched the KL20 Action Paper, described as a roadmap outlining tangible reforms to bring together founders, venture capitalists (VCs), talent, incubators and accelerators. Several initiatives were also announced set to attract startups, founders and VCs to set up shop in Malaysia in a bid to incubate high-quality local startups. The summit saw three high-tech companies and 12 VCs announcing their presence in Kuala Lumpur, in addition to three sovereign and semiconductor funds pledging RM3 billion for the Asean Investment Initiative. TRAVEL EASY WITH TREK Asia Mobiliti launched their Trek app, making it the first multimodal Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) app in Southeast Asia. This means users can now plan trips combining various options like public buses, trains, park-and-ride facilities, and even walking directions, all within the Trek app. The app offers on-demand rides through their Demand-Responsive Transit (DRT) service.​ The company aims to include even more options in the future, such as ride-hailing and micomobility options, with the goal of reducing car usage and creating a more sustainable transportation system in the city.
